This exhibition draws inspiration from the African proverb: "Until the lion learns how to write, every story will glorify the hunter.” We are calling on artists of African descent to reclaim their narratives—honoring the power of self-told stories, collective resistance, and cultural memory. Through painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, or any chosen form, artists are encouraged to present work that gives voice to lived experiences, resilience, and the truth of their communities. As Holloway explains, “Telling our stories for ourselves, sharing our resistance in all its facets, and encouraging others to continue preserving our stories in spite of systemic erasure is what A Lion Speaks is about.” About Made Visible Now in its seventh year, Made Visible is Creative Arts Workshop’s annual exhibition celebrating the creativity and vision of Black and Brown artists across our region. This exhibition explores the ever-changing dance between light and the natural world as the seasons turn. From the golden glow of autumn afternoons to the crisp clarity of winter mornings, from the gentle pastels of spring’s awakening to the vibrant brilliance of summer days, artists capture how light transforms landscapes, moods, and moments of the seasons. Through painting, photography, sculpture, mixed media, textiles, and all mediums, the works on display reveal how subtle shifts in illumination can alter perception and emotion. Each piece invites viewers to pause and notice the delicate interplay of time, nature, and light—reminding us that change is constant, and beauty is found in every season’s fleeting glow.

Are you a muralist with experience painting outdoors and a passion for community-driven projects? Your time is here! 🌟 Basin Arts, in partnership with Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG), invites qualified artists or artist teams to submit qualifications for the design and implementation of a large-scale public mural at the University Avenue underpass, located at 339 N. University Avenue in Lafayette, LA . This project seeks to transform a key gateway corridor into a vibrant, welcoming landmark that invites locals and visitors towards vital education and public service institutions along the roadway, including the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Lafayette City Hall, the Lafayette Regional Airport, the Lafayette Police Department, Lafayette Elementary School, Truman Early Childhood Education Center, alongside historic neighborhoods, and a multitude of local businesses from Interstate 10 to Highway 90. The selected artist will be commissioned to create an original mural that enhances the visual identity of the University Avenue corridor. The mural should celebrate the history and stories of the surrounding neighborhoods, honor the role of education and public service towards a thriving Lafayette, and contribute to the broader revitalization efforts along this important public thoroughfare for generations to come. This RFQ is open to professional artists or artist teams with demonstrated experience in large-scale mural design and installation. Preference may be given to artists with a connection to Lafayette or the Acadiana region. This is the first of three public art calls to be released as part LCG's University Avenue Creative Placemaking Initiative, facilitated by Basin Arts.
